In The Know

Being ready for the day that your plants arrive will help guarantee your success!

Site Your Garden Well

Vegetable and herb plants require sun to set fruit. Plant your garden, or place your containers, in a location that receives 6-10 hours of full sun each day — the more hours of full sun the better.

Reduce Weeding Later

Pests, diseases and weed control can be time-heavy tasks. Weed barrier fabrics and/or the proper use of chemicals, such as Roundup, on a garden bed before it is planted minimizes that amount of weeding necessary and has a minimal impact on the environment as it only affects the plants it kills and leaves no toxins in the soil. Follow manufacturer's instructions carefully.

Have Supplies Ready

Tomatoes and cucumbers in all of the gardens will be easier to pick, ripen more evenly, and be less prone to diseases if the plants are caged and the fruit is off the ground. Cage or stake your tomatoes immediately after planting instead of waiting until the plants need it. Purchase a complete garden fertilizer (such as 10-10-10 or 12-12-12) that also includes minor trace nutrients. Purchase a peat-based potting or sterilized garden soil for your container gardens as regular garden soil or manure can produce an abundant crop of weeds and much more work later on. Before your plants arrive, have your containers on hand and ready to plant or your garden beds tilled and ready to go.

Preparing Your Garden Bed

Garden soil should be tilled or turned over prior to planting. this process fluffs up the soil and makes it easier for tender roots to grow. You'll know your soil is ready to be worked when you grab a handful and it crumbles easily, rather than sticking together. After tilling the garden bed, break up any large clumps of soil with a rake or hoe and rake the soil level.

Preparing the Containers

Containers must have good drainage; make sure there are holes in the bottom or sides of the containers which allow excess water to escape. Placing a layer of small gravel in the container two inches deep before adding potting soil will improve drainage if there are insufficient holes in the pot.
